I went to KLUE's Urbanscape in KL PAC. What can I say? For me it was an all day music fest. A real eye opener to the local music scene. There are some pretty decent bands out there. Didn't catch Deepset's collab with some artist in some short film thing. Another reeeeaaallly big bummer to me was that GerhanaSkaCinta was performing! But it was so darn late, their slot was 9pm to 10.30pm. By that time, my friend who I was gonna catch a ride home with wanted to go back so I didn't get to catch it
On a lighter note I got to catch YUNA. She is called the Malaysian Norah Jones. To me I would say "yes" and "no". "Yes" because that girl can SING! She has the same type of husky, jazzy voice as Norah Jones. But "no" because what I found really interesting is that her music arrangement is not entirely jazz. Some songs are jazz like her song "Rocket" but some songs like "After Midnight" have a bit of indie/shoegaze influence.
Another really cool band is Telebury. They are a shoegaze/ post rock band. Not very impressive live, because they have 3 guitars. 2 rhythm, 1 lead, plus a bass and drums. So they sound really messy and noisy. As if all the instruments where fighting to be heard. Maybe that is what they mean by "wall of noise" cause that was what I heard. But that don't mean they suck. If you listen to their songs on the MP3 player you can hear all the details better. This goes to show that they are the type of band that shines more in the studio than live.
Another post rock band - NAO performed after Telebury. But I'm not really sure what genre they are. To me it was a combination of a lot of genres. Some parts I hear blue/country some parts I hear jazz but those are little parts. However for most parts I guess it would be just be metal/rock. But I have to admit you could hear them clearer compared to Telebury. Maybe it was because they were a 3 man band. Guitar, bass, drum. Simple. Another amazing thing about them is they played a short (considerably short) song as an intro. Did the introductions and "thank you"s. And then played for about 10mins -15 mins and then ended their session.
Like I mentioned before urbanscape was a real eye or ear opener to the local music scene for me. I feel left out because I claim to be a music fan and yet know nothing about the local music scene.
I've discovered a few other decent bands. But I didn't catch them. Pure Vibracion, local reggae band. The Times, they are sort of like Hujan except more rock and roll. And Trashbin Jump another indie rock band, sounds a lil old school like Hujan.
I am currently contemplating on starting a band. Dunno if there will be talent quest next semester. I missed the talent quest this semester because when I found out that there was the talent quest it was a week from the deadline. So couldn't make it. But I'm thinking if I find band mates now we could start practicing now. So that if there is a talent quest we wouldn't have to start from scratch. And also we wouldn't have to worry about rushing to practice it and balancing time with assignments. Managed to find one guitarist, Jo, who is my classmate. He seems rather keen. He recommended another person as a guitarist. But his preference of style is more on the all out rock type. Whereas my style of playing is more on the alternative / indie rock type. So we're still looking. But most importantly haven't found a vocalist
